On January 27, 2021 dr Marcus van Diemen successfully defended his PhD thesis ‘Clinical pharmacological aspects of mitochondrial function in muscle’ at Leiden University!
The aim of Marcus’ thesis was to evaluate several clinical pharmacological perspectives of mitochondrial function within the musculoskeletal system. He investigated the potential influence of physical activity on mitochondrial function, whether we can induce mitochondrial dysfunction in healthy volunteers in order to test mitochondrial enhancing drugs, whether we can influence mitochondrial function in Huntington’s Disease, and how to clinically measure mitotoxicity of commonly described drugs. Have a look at his thesis to read about his findings!
Marcus was supervised by promotores Prof. dr. A.F. Cohen and Prof. dr. R.G.H.H Nelissen, and co-promotor Prof. dr. G. J. Groeneveld.
