On the 8th of May Titiaan Post successfully defended his PhD thesis titled: Potential Applications for Human Hypoxia Models

14 May 2025

Tititaan studied his PhD at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in collaboration with CHDR and Leiden University. His thesis examines how human hypoxia models, which were originally developed for aerospace medicine, can help us better understand the body's response to low oxygen levels. Hypoxia plays a key role in medical conditions like heart and lung disease, as well as in high-altitudes and space environments. By studying these models, research aims to improve medical science, enhance safety at high altitudes, and support safety in extreme conditions across both clinical and non-clinical applications.

The thesis explores the foundation of human hypoxia models which are currently under-utilized in medical research. The dissertation examines hypoxia’s impact on oxygenation, cognitive function, and circadian rhythms, and even draws insights from hypoxia-tolerant species like the naked mole-rat and its potential applications in humans.

The thesis highlights the need for standardized approaches to better understand hypoxia’s effects and guide interventions in medicine, aviation, and extreme environments.
